Home Depot Projects

Home Depot is the world's largest home improvement retailer with 2,200+ stores and 400,000+ associates.

Positions held:

Senior Web Designer, Web Designer, E-Content Designer, Digital Graphic Publisher

Overview:

Home Depot was the very first company that I got a job with after I graduated college. Over the many years that I worked there, I eventually got promoted to a senior designer. I worked on everything you could think of when it came to their .com experience. From designing simple creative banners to creating detailed guides for a better customer experience.

A list of projects featured here include a landing page temple guide, DIY content design, special events and homepage takeovers and various additional work.

Landing Page Template Guide

About the project:

This particular project was an effort to bring consistency across various pages on the .com website. Only recently, at that time, Home Depot made the decision to put more of a focus on their entire online experience. I worked with a small team to create a templated system and guidebook for product owners and business to choose from. Since there were a plethora of products for home improvement, individual attention often could not be given to every single page in the .com ecosystem.

The result was a guidebook broken out into different zones and predetermined patterns that fit exactly to the grid system in place. This gave the business owners a sense of customization and ownership over their various products. They would pick what patterns they wanted and it would get sent to the production team to implement.

How-to Content Pages (DIY)

About the project:

With the economy struggles in the previous years, many consumers shifted to a Do-it-Yourself (DIY) mindset. They were buying less and spending more time educating themselves on how to do various home improvement projects cost effectively. Home Depot recognized this and wanted to create an online presence for the DIY customer. This was very content heavy and included online step-by step instructions, video tutorials and shopping lists.

I helped create the very first iteration of how all this content was presented online. Looking back at it now, there was much room for improvement but it met the needs at the time. The result was a patterned system for various categories of home improvement. It was difficult since I was stuck with very strict system limitations. I spend a ton of time breaking things before landing on the final pattern.

Special Events Homepage Takeover

About the project:

While at The Home Depot, I worked on all major events and helped stand up event pages and homepage takeovers. Our biggest season with for Black Friday. These pages helped drive hundreds of millions of dollars in online sales. While looking at them now, there are a kitschy but at the time that was the design direction. I designed and built the pages internally with an in-house content management platform known as documentum.
